Pelican Butte, Oregon (8036 ft)
Fremont-Winema National Forest
Route: Pelican Butte Road #980 ("Summer Route")
This route follows a sometimes steep and rocky gravel road to the summit of Pelican Butte.
From near milepost 41 on OR Highway 140 (east of Lake of the Woods) turn north onto FSR 3651 (a good gravel road). Keep straight at mile 0.1 and mile 1.5 to remain on FSR 3651. At mile 9.6 turn right (east) onto Pelican Butte Road FSR 980 (5800 ft).
FSR 980 climbs about 4.6 miles to the summit (8036 ft) and may require a high-clearance 4WD vehicle above 6000 ft. I decided to park near the start of the road (5900 ft) and hike the road to the summit.
From the summit you will get good views of the southern Cascades and Upper Klamath Lake. The lookout tower is no longer in service (except in emergencies) but it provides a base for several communication antennas and dishes.
Return the same route for a total distance of 9 miles. Watch for ATV's on the road.
