Lookout Mountain (Strawberry), Oregon (8032 ft)
Malheur National Forest
Route: FR 548
Lookout Mountain lies within the Malheur National Forest and can be reached by following FR 548 from the south to parking just below a short hike up a jeep trail to the summit. This road requires high clearance in a few spots, so I reached Lookout Mountain by hiking north on FR 548 from an unlocked gate.
I describe two ways to reach the unlocked gate on FR 548. From Short Creek RS on FR 16 south of Prairie City, continue south to find FR 1665 on your right. Follow FR 1665 for 5.0 miles and turn right (north) on FR 548 and follow it 0.8 miles to a gate. FR 548 is more primitive than FR 1665 but is passable to this point.
An alternate route is to take CR 62 south from Praire City past the Trout Farm CG to find FR 1665 on your left as CR 62 reaches a summit. Follow FR 1665 upward for 3.8 miles and turn left (north) on FR 548 and follow it 0.8 miles to a gate.
Follow FR 548 from the gate over Sheep Mountain, through forest and open meadows and along ridges northward to the base of the south ridge of Lookout Mountain. A jeep trail then leads up the south ridge to near the summit. Return the same route for a total distance of 8-9 miles.
