Drake, Light, Twelvemile, and Crook Peaks, Oregon
Fremont National Forest
Summitpost (Crook Peak)
Summitpost (Drake Peak)
Summitpost (Light Peak)
Summitpost (Twelvemile Peak)
Route: Drake Peak (8407 ft) and Light Peak (8325 ft)
From the Lakeview Ranger Station travel north on US 395 for 2.6 miles and turn east on State Highway 140. Continue east on State Highway 140 for 8.0 miles past the Warner Canyon Ski area, over Warner Pass, and turn left (north) on paved FR 3615 (signed Warner Road). You will see a sign to Mud Creek Campground. Drive 6.7 miles passing Walker Trailhead at 3.9 miles, Mud Creek Campground (with water pump and pit toilet) at 6.1 miles, and turning right on Drake Peak Road (FR 019). Follow gravel FR 019 for 4.8 miles where the road narrows, leaves the forest, and begins a climbing traverse of the open south face of Light Peak below the Drake Peak Lookout.
Park here or continue driving about another mile on the steeper and narrower road (some rock) past a road leading left towards the Lookout to a second junction. Continuing to the left will lead back towards the Lookout. Turning right will lead onto a saddle with trees sheltering primitive campsights (no tables) and lots of parking space. After passing through the trees this road steepens and becomes more primitive as it climbs to the summit of Light Peak.
Drake Peak: A jeep track continues steeply down the opposite side of Light Peak towards a saddle between Light and Drake Peaks. Give a lot of thought before driving further, if you have not yet parked. The jeep track ends at the saddle. From here, hike between rock outcroppings and then climb the open slope to the summit of Drake Peak.
Route: Twelvemile Peak (8144 ft) and Crook Peak (7834 ft)
From the Lakeview Ranger Station travel north on US 395 for 2.6 miles and turn east on State Highway 140. Continue east on State Highway 140 for 8.0 miles past the Warner Canyon Ski area, over Warner Pass, and turn left (north) on paved FR 3615 (signed Warner Road). You will see a sign to Mud Creek Campground. Drive 9.9 miles passing Walker Trailhead at 3.9 miles, Mud Creek Campground (with water pump and pit toilet) at 6.1 miles, Aspen Cabin at 7.3 miles to the South Fork Crooked Creek Trailhead (with pit toilet) on your right. Park here.
Twelvemile Peak: Climb on a jeep track to the east a short distance, then turn left onto Fremont Trail 160 and follow it as it climbs and intersects jeep trails. After about 0.7 miles take the second jeep track upward shortly after Twelvemile Peak comes into view. Climb the jeep track to near the broad saddle, then turn left and climb the ridge to the Twelvemile Peak summit. Return the same way, or continue north along the summit ridge and drop down the broad face to the Fremont Trail and turn left to return to the TH. Alternatively, turn right to reach Crook Peak.
Crook Peak: To reach Crook Peak continue north on the Fremont Trail 160 for a few miles. You will traverse Twelvemile Peak, pass a spring, cross an exposed rocky plain, drop into forest, traverse the west side of McDowell Peak, drop once more into forest, and intersect a road below Crook Peak. Cross the road and follow the trail, following cairns where the trail thins. The trail will go north, then change direction and begin traversing the south face of Crook Peak. At or before a gate select a line and climb up the slopes to the Crook Peak summit. The eastern summit is the higher of the two.
